What must not go into self storage? The list

Short answer: Anything that is harmless to people, the building and your neighbours’ belongings may go into storage. Not allowed are food, animals and plants, flammable, explosive or toxic substances, gas cylinders, damaged batteries, waste and anything illegal. The binding list is in the terms and conditions you confirm when booking.

The categories

Category Examples Reason
Perishables Food, pet food, drinks in open containers Smell, mould, pests
Living things Animals, plants Animal welfare, humidity, vermin
Flammables and explosives Petrol, diesel, spirits, fireworks, ammunition, gas cylinders Fire safety for all units
Hazardous substances Chemicals, pesticides, asbestos, pressure vessels Health, environment
Damaged batteries Swollen or defective lithium batteries Fire risk
Waste Rubbish, building debris, large quantities of old tyres Hygiene
Illegal items Stolen goods, drugs, weapons without a permit Law

The grey areas

Paint and varnish. Anything flammable or highly flammable is excluded: solvent-based varnish, thinners, nitro, spray cans and fuel paste do not belong in storage. Water-based wall paint in tightly closed original containers is fine in small quantities.

Batteries. Intact batteries inside devices, such as a cordless drill, are fine. E-bike batteries are better taken home; they are large and hard to assess. Damaged batteries are off limits.

Spirits and wine. Sealed bottles are allowed. Keep in mind the temperature changes over the year; a storage unit is not the right place for valuable wine.

Vehicles and engines. Bicycles and e-scooters yes. Petrol-powered equipment such as lawnmowers or chainsaws only with a completely emptied tank. Petrol, diesel, two-stroke mix and other fuels may not be stored in any quantity, not even in a spare can.

If in doubt, send a short email to office@lagerage.at before storing.

Why the rules exist

In a self-storage facility many customers store wall to wall. A single leaking petrol can or a mouldy box of food affects all neighbours. The rules protect your belongings as much as everyone else’s, and they are the basis for covering the stored value.

What happens if rules are broken

If something shows up during a check or via the sensors, Lagerage contacts you first. Dangerous items must be removed immediately. Serious breaches can lead to extraordinary termination of the contract; the details are in the terms and conditions.

What you can store without worry

Furniture, boxes of household goods, clothing, books, files, sports equipment, tyres, tools, seasonal decoration, stock. How to pack it properly is in Storing furniture without mould and scratches.
